More and more studies now show that the type of food we eat can genetically modify our bodies and the risk of all major diseases.
For years, researchers have studied the role of diet in breast cancer. When comparing the different countries, the researchers found strong links between high-fat diet and risk of breast cancer. The disease is rare where diets are very low in fat and rice and other plant products are dietary staples. For example, before 1950, the Japanese rice-based diet drew less than 10 percent of their calories from fat. Breast cancer is extremely rare. But in recent years, as Western influences have changed eating habits in Japan, rates of breast cancer have risen dramatically.
These international studies are just one line of evidence, however. Case-control studies are another tool for research in which researchers compare the diets of cancer patients ( “case”) with those of healthy women of similar age and background ( “control”). These studies also have shown the link between dietary fat and increased risk of breast cancer, and even on the cancer patient’s chances for survival. A Canadian study tracking patients with breast cancer for ten years found that 5 percent increase in saturated fat in the diet, the risk of dying from breast cancer soared by 50 percent.
How fat do their dirty work? Fat increase the amount of estrogen in the blood. In turn, this hormone stimulates breast cells so that cancer is more likely to occur and is more aggressive. Fatty foods also leads to obesity, which in turn is linked to increased levels of estrogen in the blood. The increased estrogen levels are also associated with early menarche (start of the first period), also a breast cancer risk factor.
Despite such evidence, doubts about the relationship of fat have persisted, fueled mainly by the results of an extensive study of nurses conducted by Harvard University in which researchers found no association between fat diets and cancer Breast rates.
Why are the results? Unlike the stocks discussed in international studies, the nurse were a fairly homogeneous group, all from eating plenty of high-fat diets. No group in this study was something akin to a traditional Asian diet and other low-fat diet.
As important as it is to get fat on your plate, is so important to the pile of vegetables and other healthy foods plants. Its fiber helps reduce the risk of breast cancer, of course, by declining estrogen levels. The plants are also foods rich in beta-carotene, vitamin C and other vitamins that protect cells against damage. Unlike animal products, most of the plants for food have little fat and not store large quantities of pesticide residues.
A quick stroll in the morning-or-other regular exercise also helps reduce the risk of breast cancer.
Of course, the good fats (Omega 3 and 6), known as essential fatty acids are vital to health. Its importance stems from the facts that constitute the membranes of every cell in the body, thus allowing nutrients into cells (to eliminate). The main body is to assist the metabolism of fat in the liver, thus ensuring that the liver is functioning well if one can reduce the risk of breast cancer.
